About

Matthew Steffens is an international director and choreographer, Broadway performer, teacher and film actor. Matthew served as Associate Choreographer on the Broadway production and tour of the 6-time Tony nominated Into The Woods working alongside the likes of Sara Bareilles, Neil Patrick Harris and Patina Miller to name a few.  He served as Choreographer for this summer's production La Traviata at the world renowned Santa Fe Opera and at The Dallas Opera this fall being simulcast around the world. He currently serves as a the Associate Choreographer for Broadway's Once Upon A Mattress.

 

Prior to calling the big apple home, as the son of a Navy SEAL, Matthew moved around most of his childhood.  A graduate of the University of Virginia he majored in Government with a minor in Theater.  For seven years, Matthew worked in the advertising industry on multiple Telly and Addy award winning campaigns for several Fortune 500 companies, ballot initiatives, and political candidates ranging from president to mayor in over 35 states.

 

In 2004, Matthew left advertising to pursue performing full-time.

He has toured the country with the Broadway musicals: Contact, Beauty and the Beast, and West Side Story (under the direction of Jerome Robbins’ assistant, Alan Johnson).

 

After years of touring, Matthew took his talents to Broadway and appeared in the Broadway musicals; Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown with Patti Lupone, and Promises, Promises opposite Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth. Matthew has also danced, fought, and flown his way through 23 operas at the world famous Metropolitan Opera. He has been seen in such operas as The Tempest, Damnation of Faust and La Traviata on movies screens around the world in the Met’s theater simulcast program.

You may also recognize him from his roles in the films The Last Five Years alongside Anna Kendrick & Jeremy Jordan, Across the Universe, Clear Blue Tuesday, Illegally Super and on TV in shows such as BEST TIME EVER with Neil Patrick Harris and in the ABC series Black Box.

 

More recently, he moved behind the table has directed and choreographed productions across the country. His critically acclaimed 2023 production of Cabaret went on to be one of Virginia Theatre Festival's most successful productions. He has served as the Associate Choreographer and Resident Director on the Off-Broadway immersive hit Queen of the Night, leading them to the Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.  He continued that work as Associate Choreographer for the Broadway musical Doctor Zhivago and has gone on to direct and choreograph shows with Playmakers Repertory Company, First Year Players, Revolucion Latina, The Public Theater Studio, and even in Xishuangbanna, China collaborating on Princess Butterfly, a new Chinese musical on ice.

This summer his work can be seen in Once Upon A Mattress on Broadway at the Hudson Theater and in Santa Fe Opera's production of La Traviata.

Matthew continues to work with the future leaders of America both in and out of the arts. For over two decades Matt has been working with kids at Camp River’s Bend. He also helped create the D.A.R.E.® America Dance Program. As a community leader, he works very closely with Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS. He serves as the Team Director for Revolucion Latina, serving the Latino youth community throughout the New York region. Having served as Dance Director for their Beyond Workshop Series and Program Coordinator for the D2GB Children’s Performing Arts Camp, Matthew passes on his love for the arts to the future generation. Most recently, he performed in the 8th annual Visible Ink with The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. A program celebrating the work of MSK patients who express themselves in writing with the support of an experienced writing mentor. Lastly, Matthew lifts up his voice each week as a member of the St. Joseph’s contemporary choir, the GSUS BAND.
